and you wanted to name a puppy after him but wanted to call him 'little shark'

I notice that the Brazilian government is doing some reform
on the spelling. The use of the letter ü will become obsolete; it will become
the letter u. Is this true? Does the reform affect the pronunciation as well?

Yes, there is a reform effective since January 1, 2009, but until 2012
both (the old and the new rules are acceptable). Only starting January 2013, all
books have to comply with the new rules.

I've
heard that Brazil was simplifying the written language, removing some of the
accent marks, umlauts, little hats (^), etc. I didn't see it listed in the table
of contents, but does your book cover these changes as well? A. Until the end of 2012 both are accepted. I have done the correction on my CD-ROM course and I will do it on the website (when I replace it with a new design - hopefully by the end of the year) and also in the grammar book when I have it printed again. This change doesn't affect at the language very much and if you are learning Portuguese as foreign language, you don't have to worry about it. For example, there are 26 letters in the alphabet now, but the use for K,W, Y hasn't changed. Some accents marks will not be used in the future (voo, ideia, etc) and the umlaut will not be used anymore (It was much easier to pronounce a word with the umlaut!).

Canja de
galinha é hoje em dia uma sopa típica brasileira mesmo que os portugueses
tenham levado essa sopa para o Brasil. Eu nunca comi canja de galinha quando
estive em Portugal e pode até ser que canja brasileira já tenha sido adaptada
ao gosto do brasileiro. A feijoada em Portugal por exemplo, é completamente
diferente da feijoda do Brasil e o portugueses não levaram a feijoada para o
Brasil porque a feijoada do Brasil é um prato inventado pelos escravos
africanos que utilizavam as sobras.

I am in a bit of a confused state because I do not know whether this woman is responding to my e-mails out of courtesy, or whether she is potentially interested. "Have a nice week" doesn't imply that you should stop writing to her for awhile. Hugs is a friendly to say goodbye, but Kisses is a affectionate way to say goodbye to close friends or loved ones. Thanks for your help! Greg A. If you are tall and blond people will notice immediately that you are a "gringo" (foreigner) and most probably you will get the nickname "alemão" (German). Brazil is very famous as a dangerous place, but when you are in Brazil you don't feel it's that dangerous. Most people are very warm-hearted and helpful and foreigners are welcome in Brazil. If you are not going to São Paulo or Rio, you don't have to worry much about safety. Just be careful and don't carry expensive things with you.

to seconday school) e escola de ensino médio (3 years - high school). Não é

both interested to learn Portuguese and Spanish simultaneously through various

I am teaching at a university in Brazil right now and I was wondering if you could clarify the difference in meaning between "beijo" and "abraco". I know that they mean "kiss" and "hug" respectively, but it seems that everyone writes abracos if it is a little more formal, but still friendly. E-mails between colleagues will use abracos, but then sometimes beijos too. Is there any difference in feeling conveyed between the two that you could explain? A.
"Um beijo"
(a kiss) and "Beijos" (kisses) can be used with your loved ones and
close friends while "Um abraço" (a hug) and "Abraços"
(hugs) can be used with anyone and it can also be translated to
"regards" or "take care" in English. As you probably
noticed, Brazilians are friendly and they usually kiss each other when they
meet. That's why it's common to say "Um beijo" or "Um abraço"
when you say goodbye to someone. Q.
My problem with Abracos is just as you said, if it
can be translated into "regards" in English, that seems quite cold
from friends. There is another teacher colleague here who I consider to be a
close friend and she will write "beijos" at the end of her
e-mails sometimes, but then "abracos" in others, and I can never
figure out why if it means "regards". The e-mail could be very nice
talking about personal information, and not related to work, and then she will
sign "abracos". Why? You would never write that to your friends in
English. Can "abracos" mean hugs or regards, just depending on the
context? How can you know how formal the writer wishes to be by this? A.
As for your question, "abracos" can mean hugs, take care or
regards, just depending on the context. Sometimes people may say
"beijos" and sometimes "abraços". Both are okay. Some
people are warmer and say "beijos" to everyone. In general,
Brazilians are very informal and warm. Don't compare with English and don't try
to figure out if there's a meaning (cold/formal) behind the word. Hope it's

study in Portugal in the future, but I have also spent 3 months in Brazil and
want to travel through the country again in the near future (maybe teach
english)... so I have more of an affinity to learn 'Brazilian portuguese'
than European. If I was to go through your course, which looks very
promising, how difficult would it be to adapt to Continental Portuguese later
on? I know that is a hard question, but what I mean is would I have to take
special classes once living in Portugal to get my communication/written skills
adapted to the continental dialect? obrigado A.
It will not be
difficult at all to adapt to continental Portuguese later on. You will be able
to understand almost everything in the same way that you can understand
American, British or Australian English.

don't know if Brazilian bachelors degrees are equivalent to American bachelors
degrees. You'd better contact the university in Brazil where you want to study.

am currently looking into a study abroad opportunity in Brazil with courses
taught in Portuguese. A. Portuguese is more similar to Spanish than to Italian or French. Spanish, Italian and French speaking people usually learn Portuguese very quickly because of the similarities among these languages. In general, Portuguese is more difficult to understand because of the pronunciation of the letter L, R and the nasal sounds, but once you know the rules, you will not have problems anymore. Fiquei surpresa com o seu
comentário, pois eu acho que a expressão não tem nada a ver com a população
negra. A cor preta nâo é usada só para se referir à população negra e
quando é usada, eu sei que pode ofender as pessoas de cor, mas não é o caso

Bem quer dizer, que todos nos temos caminhos e experiencias diferentes mas quando se refere a uma raca e cor em geral, sempre vai ter opiniao diferentes. Eu quero dizer que ja ouvi a palavra preta usada na Bahia para dar referencia as raizes do povo brasileiro que sao descendentes dos africanos quem tiveram grandes imperios como Ile aye e nosso Nago. Negao e quem eu sou e normalmente no Brasil e na lingua portuguesa usaram mais a palavra negro pra se referir ao povo negro mais "preto" pode ser usada tambem, a nao ser que ela seja usada na forma racista, so depende do sentido. Quero dar o meu parecer sobre o comentario feito acerca do "preto" significar feio, quero ja lhe dizer que, sendo negra, nao me senti nada ofendida, pois eu propria uso a expressao "a coisa ta preta!" que pode significar "a coisa ta feia!" ou "ja tive dias melhores". wish I could keep the old message board so people could still see the messages,
but due to lots of spam messages I had to remove the message board folder
from my website. There were many files involved in the message board and that is
why it was not possible for me to remove only certain files because the
files were connected. I am very sad about it (I spent many years answering
questions on the message board) and I also miss the old message board, but
I had no other choice in order to stop the spammers. People have to send me
an e-mail now and it's easier for me to sort out spam messages. I am sure
that with time there will be more messages on the new message board and
that the new message will be helpful for people like you, who are learning
Portuguese.
