Torta de frango (Chicken pie)

 

 There are many recipes for chicken pies. This one is very easy to prepare and delicious.

 

PORTUGUESE ENGLISH
Ingredientes: Ingredients:
A. Massa: A. Dough:
2 folhas de massa folhada 2 sheets of puff pastry
1 gema de ovo 1 egg yolk
B. Recheio: B. Filling:
1 colher de sopa de óleo 1 tablespoon of oil
1 cebola pequena 1 small onion
2 tomates sem pele 2 peeled tomatoes
1 peito de frango cozido (receita) 1 cooked chicken breast (recipe)
1 lata pequena de palmito 1 small can of hearts of palm
salsinha e cebolinha a gosto parsley and spring onion to taste
sal e pimenta a gosto salt and pepper to taste
Modo de fazer: Preparation:
A. Massa: A. Dough:
1. Divida a massa em duas partes (fundo/tampa). 1. Divide the dough into two parts (bottom/top crust).
2. Abra a massa (numa superfície polvilhada com farinha) com um rolo de macarrão (polvilhado com farinha).     2. Roll out the dough (on a lightly floured surface) with a rolling pin (dusted with flour).
3. Coloque a parte maior (fundo) numa forma untada com óleo. 3. Put the bigger part (bottom crust) in a pie tin greased with oil.
4. Esparrame o recheio sobre a massa.   4. Spread the filling over the dough.
5. Pincele as bordas com água. 5. Brush the edges with water.
6. Cubra o recheio com a parte menor (tampa) e aperte bem as bordas. 6. Cover the filling with the smaller part (top crust) and press the edges together.
7. Decore a torta com estrelas ou flores. 7. Decorate the pie with stars or flowers.
8. Pincele a torta com uma gema de ovo. 8. Brush the pie with an egg yolk.
9. Asse a torta em forno quente (200 graus) por 30 minutos. 9. Bake the pie in hot oven (350 F) for 30 minutes.
B. Recheio: B. Filling:
1. Tire a pele e o osso do frango cozido e pique-o em pedaços. 1. Remove the skin and the bones from the cooked chicken and cut it into pieces.
2. Esquente uma colher de óleo numa panela. 2. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan.
3. Adicione a cebola e frite até dourar. 3. Add the onion and stir-fry until golden brown.
4. Adicione o tomate, o frango, o palmito, sal e pimenta e deixe refogar uns 5-10 minutos. 4. Add the tomato, the chicken, the salt and the pepper and let it cook for about 5/10 minutes.
5. Ponha o recheio num prato e deixe esfriar. 5. Put the filling on a plate and let it cool down.

Remarks:

  • You can find hearts of palm in some supermarkets and in deli shops.

  • You can also add frozen green peas and olives to the filling.

  • Instead of puff pastry, you can use crust pastry or home-made pastry.
  • Puff pastry is available in sheets and in block. Buy sheets, so you don't need to roll out the dough.
